The calculator first determines your container's volume, then applies the wax's density and your fragrance load to work out the final blend weight.
For example, a 7.5 cm × 9 cm container filled with soy wax at an 8% fragrance load comes out to about 386.5 g of melted blend in total — roughly 355.6 g of wax and 30.9 g of fragrance oil. These figures are calculated by Faluma's candle calculator using the same formula as the tool above. Change the wax type or the fragrance percentage and both numbers shift automatically.
Yes — density is why two candles of the same size can require different amounts of wax. Faluma uses the following reference densities: soy and paraffin at around 0.90 g/cm³, coconut wax at about 0.92 g/cm³, and beeswax at roughly 0.96 g/cm³. The calculator adjusts the moment you switch wax types, so you never redo the math by hand.
The two examples above use the same 7.5 cm × 9 cm container filled with soy wax. Change either the size or the wax type and the calculated blend shifts in ways that aren't always intuitive, because volume, density, and your fragrance percentage all interact rather than adding up independently.
Take a larger 8 cm × 10 cm container filled with beeswax instead of soy, at a 5% fragrance load — a level candle makers commonly use with beeswax, which already carries its own natural aroma. The larger volume alone would call for more wax, but beeswax's higher density (about 0.96 g/cm³ against soy's 0.90 g/cm³) pushes the total blend up further still: around 521.2 g in total, with about 495.1 g of wax and 26.1 g of fragrance oil. Two changes — a bigger container and a denser wax — compound into a total blend roughly 35% heavier than the original 386.5 g example, even though the fragrance percentage actually dropped.
One detail worth knowing: the calculator's total blend figure isn't simply volume multiplied by density. Faluma applies a 1.08 factor to the raw volume-and-density calculation before determining the recipe quantities. This factor is already included in the calculator's result, so you don't need to add it again when following the calculated quantities. The same factor applies whether you measured your container by diameter and height or by water weight — it's applied to the resulting volume figure either way.
It's a good idea to keep 10-15% more wax on hand than the calculator shows, in case of a small spill or a test pour before your final batch. The number above is the calculated amount for the finished candle, not a handling margin.
The calculator assumes a cylindrical container using diameter and height. For a square or irregular container, switch to the water displacement method instead — fill it with water, weigh the water, and enter that weight to get an accurate volume regardless of shape.
Yes — Faluma supports blends of up to three wax types, each at its own percentage, if you want to combine properties like soy's clean burn with paraffin's stronger scent throw.
It typically ranges from about 6-10% of the total blend weight depending on the wax, though it varies by fragrance brand — see our Fragrance Load Calculator for wax-specific guidance.
Estimates are indicative. Always test-burn before selling and check the wick is safe for your wax and container.
